Last night we got a chance to get our first looks at the Brown County and West Central girls basketball teams as they faced off in an early season WIVC matchup.  After 1 qtr of play, these 2 teams were tied up  11 but West Central would not waste any time in changing that trend.  The Lady Cougars got a bit of a lead before halftime and then really separated themselves from Brown County in the second half en route to the 64-43 victory.  Brown County’s Vanessa Markert led all scorers with 20 points on the night.  For West Central, Kaydee Carmody led the Lady Cougars with 16 points.  As a team, Brown County shot an outstanding 71% from the Free Throw line which any coach has to be pleased with this early in the season.  West Central had trouble finding the basketball night but don’t expect that to be a common problem or this team.  I think that West Central will be a team that has grabbed a lot of attention by the end of this season as they have many strengths and have some excellent players coming off of the bench.  Now looking at the season for Brown County, I think the Lady Hornets really have the potential to turn some heads and be a competitive team.  They have a great group of girls but they just need that varsity game experience to really get to the level they are looking to be at.

Two teams that suffered losses in the quarterfinals would square off in our final game of the day.  Unity and West Central would match up very well with each other.  The big difference in this contest would be an experienced roster versus a young roster.  These two teams would be tied at 22 at the half with the momentum favoring Unity.  The Lady Mustangs would come out in the 3rd quarter and jump out to a small lead but West Central was up to the task and would only be down by 2 heading into the 4th quarter.  This bucket-for-bucket pace would continue all throughout the 4th quarter and neither team could pull ahead so we would go to OT.  In the overtime period West Central had a 1 point lead when Brooklyn Moore would be fouled and get the chance to shoot two free throws with 1.8 seconds on the clock.  Moore made both free throws and secured the 48-47 victory for the Lady Mustangs.  West Central was led in scoring by Andrea Lietz with 16, while Brooklyn Moore added 14 for Unity.

Game #4 of the day would be the barn burner of the day with Canton and West Central squaring off.  Canton had a definite size advantage over West Central but what surprised everyone was the speed and aggression they played with.  The Little Giants were more than capable to run up and down the floor with great success.  West Central never really found their grove in this game until the 4th quarter when they finally made their run.  A couple of forced turnovers and defensive stops allowed the Lady Cougars to climb right back into this game and they would hold on for the 54-52 win.  Ashley Buchman led the Little Giants with 16 points while Andrea Lietz added 17 for the Lady Cougars.  West Central never got comfortable until late in this contest and when they did, they looked like a solid team.  They will have to play a lot better in their next game as they will take on Illini Bluffs.

West Central opened the basketball season in a great way tonight over Brown County.  Both teams played a tight game until about halfway through the second quarter, when Kelsey Bettis made three 3 pointers in a row and broke this game wide open. One of the things I like about this West Central team is their ability to change a game in an instant with their long range shooting.  But when that was not working for them, they were able to rely on Andrea Lietz to provide a great presence underneath the basket. Brown County had a lot of trouble handling the intense full court pressure and as a result committed 31 turnovers in the contest.  Vanessa Markert and Emily Hendricker both reached double digits in the scoring column tonight for Brown County.  Andrea Leitz led all scorers with 23 points tonight and Meghan Lashmett came in off the bench and added 15 more.  West Central shot 36% from the field and 61% from the free throw line while Brown County went 36% from the field and just 44% from the free throw line.

Tonight’s WIVC match-up featured Brown County and West Central.  Brown County is a very young team that is still trying to find a groove while West Central is a young team that has improved greatly throughout this season and has a bright future.  The Lady Cougars jumped out to a hot start tonight and played very fundamentally sound volleyball the entire match.  Brown County struggled to get their coverage adjusted all night long and West Central did a excellent job of finding those holes in their  25-14, 25-11 conference victory.  Rachel Moore led the Lady Cougars with 17 Assists and Victoria Miller led the Lady Cougars with 9 Kills and 3 Blocks tonight.  Vanessa Markert led Brown County with 4 Kills and 2 Blocks.  Brown County falls to 4-12 (2-3), while West Central improves to 18-7 (5-2)
