Beardstown’s 11/12 Softball team made their weekend to the state tournament a very successful and fun experience this weekend.  They got things started on Saturday when they took on Evergreen Park.  Right away it would be shown that Beardstown would have little trouble with this team as Beardstown would score 3 runs in the first and 6 runs in the second en route to a 11-1 victory.  The big stories to come out of this game was Autumn Hobrock finally finding her bat as she went 3-3 with 3 RBI’s and 3 runs scored.  The other story was the outing on the mound for Olivia Dour.  She would have a bit of trouble with the first batter she face but she got into a rhythm and really looked like the pitcher that we have seen in the past.  The line score for Evergreen Park was 1 run, 5 hits, 3 errors, and 6 left on base while Beardstown would score 11 runs, on 9 hits, commit 1 error, and only left 2 on base.

The second day of action saw Beardstown taking on a very tough, and quick, Freeport club.  Needless to say this game would prove to be the game of the tournament season when it was all said and done.  After 4 and a half innings of play both teams would be scoreless but Beardstown would soon find their bats getting 2 runs on 2 hits in the bottom of the 5th.  Needing only 3 outs would prove to be a challenge for Beardstown in the top of the 6th as Freeport used a lead off Ground Rule Double from Abby Smith to plate 3 runs and turn the tables on Beardstown.  However with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th inning and no one on, Taylor Danner was able to reach safely on an error.  Raquel Rawlins would get a base hit and then Maddie Craig would walk to load the bases for Olivia Dour.  Luckily for Beardstown the Freeport catcher, Taylor Holland, would allow a rare pass ball and Danner was able to slide into home safely to tie the game up.  Dour came out in the top of the 7th and pitched through a tough jam to give her team a chance to end it.  Autumn Hobrock would come up and line a double on the third pitch of her at bat followed by Alyssa Dour sending a walk off double to score Hobrock and earn Beardstown a spot in Tuesday night’s state championship contest.  This Beardstown squad would not give up today and their fight and determination has earned them the day off tomorrow. If Beardstown can win Tuesday, or Wednesday if defeated on Tuesday, they would earn themselves a trip to the Central Region Tournament in Indianapolis.

The game between these two teams was expected to a good competition and it definitely lived up to that expectation. These two teams entered today’s game by both picking up wins yesterday and today’s winner would get a spot in Tuesday night’s championship game. Tied at 1 after a inning of play, Peru looked like they were up to the task of being the first team to defeat the Beardstown team. But in the 3rd inning, Beardstown, was able to take control of the game and never allowed Peru to score another run in the game. Beardstown takes this one by a score of 12-1 over Peru. Peru’s only run of the ball game was scored by lead off hitter Kamryn Nelson in the bottom of the 1st inning.

To open up the 2011 9/10 Softball State Tournament, Peru and Clear Ridge squared off in a great ball game down at Brown County Little League in Mt. Sterling, IL.  These two teams provided a great opening game for this tournament, as they provided plenty of excitement for all.  Tied at 0 through 2 innings of play, Clear Ridge plated 2 runs in the top of the 3rd to take a 2-0 lead.  Peru then answered back with a 7 run bottom of the 3rd inning.  Clear Ridge did threaten to make a comeback in the Top of the 6th but could not get it done and fell by a score of 9-6.

For Peru, Jaden Corsolini (pronounced–CORSO-LINI) gets the win on the mound while striking out 6 batters and going 2-3 at the plate with 2 runs scored.

GAME 2:

River Forest vs. Beardstown

Game 2 featured a David vs. Goliath type match-up, to the eye, as most of the River Forest team was smaller than the smallest player on the Beardstown squad.  But that did not stop River Forest as they put runners in scorers position every inning.  But the team from Beardstown continued their offensive ways and won the game by a score of 11-4.

For Beardstown, Olivia Dour (pronouced–DOOR) gets the win on the mound for Beardstown, while Megan Stock went 2-4 at the plate with 2 hard line shots to the right field fence.
For River Forest, Fionna Girardo takes the loss, while Maeve (pronounced MAYVE, rhymes with DAVE) went 2-2 at the plate with 2 runs scored and both hits were triples!

River Forest will play Clear Ridge tomorrow at 2 pm in the elimination game, while Peru will play Beardstown at 4pm in the state semi-finals.

Calhoun and Beardstown faced each other tonight in the 9/10 softball district championship game.  The game was tied at 1 with two outs in the bottom of the 3rd and Beardstown opened up a 5-1 lead and would never look back in this one as they won 10-2 for the District Championship.  Olivia Dour threw a no hitter tonight for Beardstown while Megan Stock went 2-2 at the plate with a Double, Triple, and 4 RBI’s.  Calhoun just could not time Dour’s pitches all night long and really gave it their all tonight.  Beardstown advances on to the Sectional in Taylorville on Friday night at 6pm.

Tonight’s game was expected to be a good match up between Brown County and Calhoun, and instead this game just ended up completely one sided.  Calhoun scored 8 runs in the bottom of the first and Brown County could just never catch up from that.  I think that Brown County was tired and really out of pitching and that just did not help when Calhoun had about all of their pitching available.  Jesse Oswald got the win on the mound for Calhoun with the final score favoring Calhoun 19-2.  Calhoun will now advance to tomorrow night’s championship game against Beardstown at 7 pm.

In the winners bracket championship game, Beardstown and Brown County met to see who would advance to Friday night’s championship game.  This game started out great early on as it was tied at 1 after the 1st inning.  Then as the game went on, Beardstown slowly gained more runs off of Walks, Stolen Bases, Errors, and Wild Pitches.  Brown County made a couple of attempts to come back into this one but they could not get it done and were defeated by Beardstown 12-4.  Beardstown advances to the Championship game on Friday night and Brown County falls to the play-in game Thursday night at 6pm against Calhoun.

The third and final meeting between these two teams would follow the same course as the other two.  Good hitting, strong defense, and solid pitching performances.  The only downfall in this one would be who would make that mistake that would give the other team an advantage in the game.  Unfortunately for Richland County, they would commit those mistakes at the wrong times when Calhoun could really take advantage of them.  Richland County ended up commiting 4 errors to Calhoun’s 3, also Richland County had to many pitches go to the backstop with runners on 3rd base.  The final in this one would be 9-5 in favor of Calhoun.  Richland County’s Dani Hawkins did everything she could to help her own case on the mound by also going 2-3 at the plate this evening.  For Calhoun, Abby Baalman got the win on mound and Faith Maag went 2-3 at the plate with 2 singles and a run scored.  Calhoun now advances on to the State Tournament this Saturday in River Forest, IL.
