The 2012 Football season kicked off in Mt. Sterling last night as Brown County hosted Calhoun in a week 1 battle.  The start of this game looked to be a game of strong defenses but Brown County finally turned up the Offense in the 2nd quarter.  The 2nd quarter scoring started with Braxton Phelps getting 75 & 26 yard touchdown runs.  Then towards the end of the quarter Michael Scoggin had a 35 yard pick 6 interception to bring us to a 36-6 halftime score in favor of BC.  Calhoun came out in the 2nd half and really dominated the offensive side of the game with a couple of touchdowns but it would not be enough as Brown County picked up the 36-18 victory.  Brown County definitely had  a lot of trouble on defense in the 2nd half as they could not get a stop and just looked out of sync the entire half.  Calhoun’s Tavis Gauntt lead the team with 92 yards over 7 carries while Brown County’s Braxton Phelps lead the Hornets with 164 yards over 9 carries.  Both teams showed some positives last night but they have a lot they can improve on. Best part is this was only week 1 and they have 8 more weeks of football to improve upon.

Calhoun and Triopia squared off in a great WIVC battle this evening. These two teams played a hard fought game where the Trojans were plagued by poor shooting and yet found a way to stay in this game.  As the night went on, Triopia started to figure out the key to playing defense against the Warriors and as a result took the lead in the 4th quarter.  Though Triopia could not take advantage of multiple opportunities to put Calhoun away and we would have to settle this one in overtime.  2 three pointers from Leo Herzberger would pull the Trojans out to a quick lead and Calhoun just could not respond and Triopia would pick up the 49-43 overtime victory.  Tyler Baalman led the Warriors with 25 points this evening while Leo Herzberger led the Trojans with 22 points on the evening.

The first game of the night would be the best game I have witnessed this entire season.  Lutheran came out and got to a 4 point lead early in this game and held it for a while.  But then Calhoun came to life and took the lead back and these two teams would battle back and forth the rest of the first game.  Calhoun had a chance to put it away in game one, but a service error gave Lutheran the advantage and they took game one.  Lutheran was able to carry the momentum over from game one into the start of game 2 and Alexis Gorsek pushed out 10 straight service points.  Calhoun was just never able to recover and would see their season end as Lutheran picks up the win 25-23, 25-11.  Maddie Baalman had 11 assists and Morgan Stein added 8 kills for the Lady Warriors.  For Lutheran, Abby Heise added 13 kills tonight and Cydney Long had 10 assists.  Lutheran will advance on to the Sectional Championship against Payson on Thursday night.

Calhoun and Beardstown faced each other tonight in the 9/10 softball district championship game.  The game was tied at 1 with two outs in the bottom of the 3rd and Beardstown opened up a 5-1 lead and would never look back in this one as they won 10-2 for the District Championship.  Olivia Dour threw a no hitter tonight for Beardstown while Megan Stock went 2-2 at the plate with a Double, Triple, and 4 RBI’s.  Calhoun just could not time Dour’s pitches all night long and really gave it their all tonight.  Beardstown advances on to the Sectional in Taylorville on Friday night at 6pm.

Tonight’s game was expected to be a good match up between Brown County and Calhoun, and instead this game just ended up completely one sided.  Calhoun scored 8 runs in the bottom of the first and Brown County could just never catch up from that.  I think that Brown County was tired and really out of pitching and that just did not help when Calhoun had about all of their pitching available.  Jesse Oswald got the win on the mound for Calhoun with the final score favoring Calhoun 19-2.  Calhoun will now advance to tomorrow night’s championship game against Beardstown at 7 pm.

In the winners bracket championship game, Beardstown and Brown County met to see who would advance to Friday night’s championship game.  This game started out great early on as it was tied at 1 after the 1st inning.  Then as the game went on, Beardstown slowly gained more runs off of Walks, Stolen Bases, Errors, and Wild Pitches.  Brown County made a couple of attempts to come back into this one but they could not get it done and were defeated by Beardstown 12-4.  Beardstown advances to the Championship game on Friday night and Brown County falls to the play-in game Thursday night at 6pm against Calhoun.

The third and final meeting between these two teams would follow the same course as the other two.  Good hitting, strong defense, and solid pitching performances.  The only downfall in this one would be who would make that mistake that would give the other team an advantage in the game.  Unfortunately for Richland County, they would commit those mistakes at the wrong times when Calhoun could really take advantage of them.  Richland County ended up commiting 4 errors to Calhoun’s 3, also Richland County had to many pitches go to the backstop with runners on 3rd base.  The final in this one would be 9-5 in favor of Calhoun.  Richland County’s Dani Hawkins did everything she could to help her own case on the mound by also going 2-3 at the plate this evening.  For Calhoun, Abby Baalman got the win on mound and Faith Maag went 2-3 at the plate with 2 singles and a run scored.  Calhoun now advances on to the State Tournament this Saturday in River Forest, IL.
